^^ I found a story about honda motor, that was runing on natural gas. Compression became low and there was noise so guys after inspection disasembled the engine. They found that valves were not in place, they (with seats) were on 1/8" deeper in head then needed.
I think that had to be a fluke. I know for a fact (because I am old enough to remember it) that a lot of cars built in the sixties and early seventies during the era of leaded fuel, had a hard time using unleaded fuel because the engines had soft valve seats that needed the lead to cushion the hit of the valve into them. Once unleaded fuel became the norm, a lot of older cars needed new valve seats. Most European imports did not need them (Japanese imports had yet to really make an impact here in the US at the point)
1/8 of an inch is pretty deep into the head, I would think that the cam would have stopped the valve from retreating back that far in the first place.
