Hey group, my 2001 Tib has an intermittent startup problem. Sometimes its hard to start - the engine will crank over but does not start. Other times the car starts right away; In both cases once the car is on it runs fine with no problems.

I was thinking of trying to replace the fuel relay first. Can someone tell me where the fuel pump relay is located on a 2001 Tiburon? Thanks.

 

it's up above the driver's footwell. go down there with a flashlight and look up, you'll see it. been ages since i've had to look for it, but i know it's somewhere in there.

 

mosul210, did you by any chance ever own a 86-89+ Honda? I haven't seen anyone ask that specific question other then in honda forums. Good place to start as they had crappy solder jobs.

 

Have you had the battery tested?

Actually I had a 93 Honda Del Sol and it had a similar intermittent startup problem. In that case it turned out to be a bad main relay(same as the fuel pump relay).

battery/alternator seem fine because ascesories all work, and the car runs fine after it is started.

Cool, do you know if its a 3 prong, or 4 prong relay? I just want to make sure I know what I'm looking for. Thanks.

 

More likely to be the fuel pump. I don't think I've ever heard of the relay going out.

 

I'd try the fuel pump test, should route it through the relay and prove that the system is good.

 

Definitely do the fuel pump test. See redz how to in the DIY forum.

If you really want to check the relays, the fuel pump relay is under the footwell with another relay, a resistor, and the flasher unit. See the sticky in the electrical forum to see which one is the fuel pump. You can also check the main relay which is located directly under the steering column (seperate from FP relay)...

Thanks guys, I replaced the relay. Not sure if that was the problem but we will see how it goes. By the way the sticky on the electrical forum was really useful.

 

Hmm well if that is not the problem I had a similar issue.

First I was told it was a fuel pump so I went out and bought a $144 fuel pump and a $15 fuel filter wasnt the problem I was thinking it was the relay also but wasnt sure had a my dads friend look at it (hes a hyundai mechanic) he found out it was the crank sensor cost about $93 and was what the problem was so if its not the relay try that.
