I have a new starter here that I just need to know how to install (big thanks to 97tibby fing02.gif for that).
Can anyone give me a run down and explain how? I'm pretty clueless on what to do/where to start..

lol and i just did one a few months ago during the bbq to peters car...

ok first

disconnect the battery

then underneith the IM is where your starter lies

you gotta unbolt the bracket that holds it
then unbold the starter
then unclip the harness

then reinstall everything

its REALLY easy to do but you will need to go under the car to remove it and reinstall is like 6 bolts total

ok..

this is what i do

Disconnect the battery

disconnect the "clip" wiring harness
Use a 10mm to take off the ground cable from the starter
you can do both of these either from the drivers side hood area leaning over or you can jack the car up and get it with an extension on the right side of the IM support

Once you do that
Get a 14 mm and LOOSEN the top bolt on the starter
Get under the car and find the other 14mm bolt.. its hard to see, but you can certainly feel it..
Remove it
Because of gravity you will thank me for this

Now get your a$$ back to the top and remove the other 14mm
Now.. just slide the starter behind the IM support.. flip it so it can point towards you (your under the car) then you can remove it from the right side of the support

If done right.. you should be able to to do this within an hour.

hahahahha

it was unintentional man

i just always do it without removing the IM support..
Those 14MM are a pain in the a$$ for me tongue.gif

Since i know the bolt sizes i might as well say them..

BTW..
There was also a switch sometime between 00-03 where the starter ground bolt switched from 10mm to 12mm, similar to the alternator positive terminal.

Dont feel bad faith.. ask yourself how would i know all these sizes

jaws how can you do this from the top?
and how do you get to that top 14mm? i can't even get my hand anywhere near it to feel, much less a socket.
where's the 10mm ground cable?
the only things i was successfully able to find is the wire clip and the bottom 14mm...
did you take the intake off?

you only remove the top bolt from the top
thats it..
if you have medium sized hands and far enough reach, you can probably remove the harness from the top as well..

its just much easier from the bottom

The ground cable is on the back of the starter...
Look at that thick wire going through the top of the tranny, just under the thermostat.
That same wire also has a ground on the top right tranny bolt (17mm tongue.gif )

Keep following it..
It will split into the two wire clip and the ground cable.

The intake does not need to be removed.

You might wanna take off the support though.. if you never done this before. You can do it without doing so.. but you might as well, since its your first time.

well, i just realized that the reason the old starter didn't work isn't because it was bad, it's because one of the bolts got stripped out!
so i put the new one in, then realized hey there's only 1 bolt holding it on ... so the starter isn't tight.
it doesn't start, i'll have to go to ace tomorrow or something.

now .. once i go get the other bolt tomorrow, how do you get to it? (i'm talking about the one closest to the front bumper, the 14)

i had more success taking the intake off and doing it from the top, and from the bottom the only time the IM support got in the way was during removal of the old one and replacement of the new one.

btw jaws the ground nut is a 12 wink1.gif

if you have the bottom bolt tighten already... loosen it..

you need to have the starter perfectly alligned so that bolt will go in.. remember it screws into the starter NOT the tranny..

it needs to go in THROUGH the tranny side.

Stick the bolt in through the tranny and have someone wiggle/shift/move around the starter so you can have it alligned correctly.

btw.. do not start the car with the starter only being held on by one bolt.. that screws up the teeth on the starter.

Dont know what else to tell you man.. bolting on the starter is not that hard..

WAIT.. you just did an auto to manual swap..

Are you using a MANUAL starter? or an AUTO starter?
