Hi!
I have 1996 Lantra Wagon 1.8 M/T (MAP-based engine ).
I have not any aftermarket modifications at all.
After long, long thinking in the performance gains/money context I think the best modification for my car is ECU reprogramming (except free modifications such as TB coolant bypass ...).
After any search I found this: http://www.elecauto.com/ubihyundai.htm.
At this page I have seen EPROM memory code for my car ($200 without shipping cost ). As they said performance gains are ~ 10%. The stock EPROM memory in the ECU box is replaced by the tuned EPROM memory.
So I can return stock EPROM memory at any time. Anyone could you say is it worth ?
BTW I found another site (www.real-engineering.com ) that has similar EPROM memory for my ECU but with performance gains 7-10 hp at high RPM as they said (~ $400 without shipping cost too).
Anyone could you comment this modification ?
Thanks in advance.

Default Hi from Russia!

First... Great English for someone in Russia!!

As for Real-Engineering, there is somebody on this website from that company. I will let them answer.

Reprogramming the ECU was never very popular with Hyundai's and I don't think they reacted well to it. I'm not real smart on the subject though.

Thanks for your comment.
As I understand cost-effective "Naturally Aspired" engine modifications (such as CAI,WAI and other air intake modifications ) are less effective on the MAP-based engine than MAF-based engine. So I think MAP-based engine (such as my engine ) needs with another "more performance" fuel maps in the ECU memory.

This might interest you :

now keep in mind that this is still a couple of months off, however, this thread is mainly based for tuning MAF based cars, MAP (According to Rick/2race4real, US Contact for Real-Engineering) ECU's are easier to tune.....there may already be an application available, but Rick would have to confirm that for you. You might want to post in the Real-Engineering section about that for a quicker response.

Oh, and WELCOME TO RD!

I am Russian and I am living in Russia. So far I never been in other countries.
As I said before I already have posted some questions about ECU tuning for my car to the Real-Engineering Technical Manager. Really I have now Real-Engineering ECU tuning suggestion for my car but it is expensive for me ($380 without shipping cost ). It is necessary to note that Real-Engineering suggestion is to replace my stock ECU box by their box with the tuned ECU.
Also i have posted this question to the another Hyundai conferences and someone said that it is dangerous game with my stock ECU (He is meaning the EPROM memory module replacement in the stock ECU box ). So my question to anyone in this conference - what is better in the ECU tuning safety context :
- replacement whole stock ECU box by the whole box with tuned ECU?(expensive for me )
- replacement EPROM memory module by the tuned EPROM memory module in the stock ECU box? (acceptable for me )

BTW I have Siemens logo on the stock ECU box.
Thanks in advance

I do not think that reprogramming ECU is that great and don't find it very popolar in Hyundai community.

If you're gonna mess with your car's computer, you're better off getting a piggy back like the SAFC II then with changing the prom.
