Default HELP 99 tib makes rubbing noise

So I have a 99 tiburon and just recently as of last week this rubbing noise sounds like its coming from my axel and i can feel it in the wheel. The steering wheel vibrates and when i go around right turns it goes away but when i straighten out it starts again. I recently replaced the axel on the same side the shaking is, the faster i go the more intense the sound gets. Also i had my brother install the axel and was wondering if the black box should be all the way into the transmission or should it be sticking out an inch, I have an automatic transmission

A photo of the black box in question would be helpful. If you can push in or pull out on the end of the axle and it moves more than a fraction of an inch, that's a problem.

I took the wheel off and tried moving the axel in and out and it didnt move at all, it all seems to be okay as in the suspension, hub, rotor, brakes and everything look good. It still does it in neutral and as i build up speed it gets louder and louder, Ill try to get a picture of the black box today. Thanks stocker

I wonder how the bearing preload was set. If that was done improperly, you may be hearing the death knell of a wheel bearing. Give the wheel a good shake by grabbing at 12 and 6 o'clock. It should have no appreciable movement. If you grab the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock, it will wiggle because the steering gear will move. Also I wonder if the axle itself was good. Was it new/rebuilt/junkyard or what? Are you sure it isn't the OTHER side of the car making noise? It's hard to tell without riding on the hood with the car in motion . . .

my brother says its the other side but Ive had 2 other friends drive it who are mechanics say it was the drivers side, and yes I bought a brand new oem drive shaft and I took it to a transmission specialist today he said it was the transmission or the differential inside but the transmission was already bad before this and this sound just started happening so maybe its just the wheel bearing. idk going to look now, and the guy at the trans place said the axel was in right

So i jacked up the side i thought the sound wasn't coming from and my wheel bearing is shot. also my differential has alot of play in it, moves about 1 inch back and forth. You think if i get a new hub assembly it should atleast get rid of the noise? Like i said my brother thought it was on that side but I thought it it wasn't (im no mechanic). Im going to go get a new assembly and hopefully this is whats cuasing the bad noise that seems to get worse and worse as i go faster. Ive replaced 2/4 bearings so far 1 in the back and 1 on the front on the otherside so I think its about that time. I know what the bearing sounds like when its shot and it kind of does sound like it.

The differential? That part of the gearbox where the axles go in? Should have no play. It is hoped you used the wrong term.

Wheel bearings go out. It happens. You get a new one and replace the old, not a huge deal.
