Got A Cool Shift Light... Help Me Install It!
Hey guys.
I want to install a shift light, and need an RPM signal.
I searched and found a way to connect behind the cluster BUT I want to avoid removing the dash. Again.
Is there a way to tap into the rpm signal at another location? that dosen't require removing the dash, hopefully?
Thanks!!
PS, once installed, I'll post pics of a nice, small sequential shift light. yammy!

You can hook it up to the Engine Speed pin out of the ECU but I only have the wiring diags for the North American spec tibs.
but to tell you the truth, it is actually easier to just tap it behind the cluster rather than getting to the ECU and looking for that wire

Easier is in the eye of the beholder. If you don't mind being upside-down under the dash, just pull the connector and poke a fine multimeter lead into each wire until you find the one that matches the correct ECM pin.
I'd consider pulling the dash. . .

You don't want to start tapping into the ECU wires, always ends up causing problems in the long run. If you are scared of taking your dash off, just do it. After you do it once, and see how easy it is, you can do it in 15 or less minutes every time. Doing the one on the back of the cluster requires no modifying or cutting of any wires, and is completely reversible.

Taking the dash off is easy cheesy lemon squeezy.
hmmm, Nevermind, you guys are talking about BEHIND the cluster, I don't know nothing about that. I eventually will when I find me some gauges, and have to deal with that.

i would just take off the cluster and do it.
but its not bad to do the ECU tap either. and it WONT result in any issues if its done right.
if you have a ECU pinout, you can find the right wire and use a simple wire tap and you should be good to go.

I agree, but most users won't be careful or do it right. LOL Remember the Green RD1? That was all wiretapped on the ECU wiring, took forever to track the issues down, like 3 years.
If you MUST go for the ECU wiring, remove the ECU harness cover, the black part, and follow your wire back from there. It's easy to do, just pop the harness end off of the ECU, then remove the screw at the tip. Then cut the zip tie off of the back of the black plastic piece (where the harness tail comes out), and remove the electrical tape. The cover at the end should come off, and let you slip the entire harness out of the cover. Now you can trace that wire back and tap it where you want, and how you want.
If this didn't make sense, I'll take pics and do a DIY on it when I get home, I have a spare ECU plug cover and ecu wiring harness at home.

It'll be tomorrow at the earliest, now that I know how to do it, it's super simple. I just REFUSE to cut or tap into any wires in my car anymore after the last few tap disasters I've seen.
