check your flanges. put your hand near there to feel any exhaust coming out. gasket might be burnt out.
next, check and lubricate your boot plugs, and your spark plugs properly. check the intake manifold and valve cover for oil leaks. the exhaust usually comes through the cowls. i have had this problem before and i had to buy high quality gasket, not the paper acrylic crap they sell.

if it smells like unburnt fuel check the "pulse dampener" on the end of the fuel rail, passenger side. It is just a thing that screws in. I remember reading something on EXD about one of those leaking just a little, but it was enough to notice it from inside of the car.
If not you may want to remove the back seat and make sure something weird hasn't happened to the hoses running to the pump. I can explain how to get to it in my 03 elantra, but the tib seats are going to change that procedure.
