Only the first cat is monitored by the ECU. You can remove the second one and not get a CEL. It is illegal though, so if you live in a state with strict emissions standards they'll fail you.

California was probably the reason for adding the 2nd cat. Stupid emissions. Wasn't Hyundai sued in California for lying about the horsepower on the 2001 Tiburon because the addition of the 2nd cat dropped performance?

All of those cars with Betas in them. I had a 2001 Elantra, and I got some of the settlement. It was 2 hp off.

You got some

"Your" lawyer got more probably by several orders of magnitude

and

Hyundai increased prices to compensate for the loss.

Great. I opted out of the class and declined to sue because it was a stupid thing over which to sue.

So what happens if you eliminate the first cat but not the second one?

You go to prison if you are a mechanic doing it for someone else. You get a permanent check engine light if you DIY.

So what's the fix? For example, my accent has headers on it where it should have a cat but it has the rear cat and o2 sensor and I will be getting a set of headers for my Tib soon. What do I do ?

Oh and I don't have ECheck in my city.

Relocate and extend the 2nd 02 sensor to behind the 2nd cat and seal up the old 02 hole.

So could I just extend the first o2 sensor to the behind the second cat so my ecu would read from it only?
