Default Dry Sump Conversions

Has anybody ever heard of the rumor that converting to dry sump systems will give you more horsepower? It it a myth or has it actually been proven?

It can, but only a small amount. Your oil pump would no longer be parasitic because it's converted to an electric oil pump.

Same goes for coolant system conversions to using an electric pump.

so the alternator is less parasitic if (electrical) energy demand increases due to electrical versus belt-driven pumps?

Less parasitic during full power pulls. Overall a similar amount of total power is required to pump the oil either way, but you spread out the parasitic loss to 100% of the time the engine is running vs. ramping it up when you are revving higher.

I should also note, I doubt we are talking about more than a couple of horsepower in the most extreme condition.

If you are only running off a battery and have NO alternator (think 1/4 mile at a time here) then it is relatively better to use electric pumps vs. engine-driven. For a street car, you are getting pretty close to scraping the bottom of the barrel looking for power gains in electric oil and water pumps.
