So, did you get the sensor hooked back up and in place?
For your gas cap, make sure it's not CROSS THREADED, and if it's not, go get a new one. Thread it on correctly and turn till it clicks 3 times.

cross thread- when the screw dosn't line up just right, or is cocked to the side and screwed in. if your gas cap (plastic) was cross threaded into the pipe (metal) in the past, it may be the problem. it won't seal up just right. You should buy a new one at your favorite auto establishment. It's a 50,000 mile maintenance item noone checks.
