Curiosity has the best of me......if you take a clay bar to dirty chrome trim or even rims...will it do anything or is it a waste?

Claying anything visibly dirty will result in the clay getting dirty pretty quick. Try it on your freshly-cleaned chrome, at worst it will have no effect. Just don't forget the cleaning/lubricant spray.
