O.K. so a few days ago I was driving and my car just started dying on me. It died four times just getting it the one or two miles back to my house. Also even when it wouldn’t all out die its rpms would drop for no reason. So I took it in to the shop to see what was wrong with it. They couldn’t get it to die on them and neither did it die on my dad when he drove it. The only thing the could find was that the iat sensor had been shoved in the maf sensor without a grommet and that there was an old code having to do with that. They also said that since the grommet was gone that it had been sucking in a little bit of dirt. I had noticed that the sensor wasn’t in the right place when I took out my resonator a while ago, but I had figured it was all right there because I hadn’t had any problems. Since I got it back from the shop it has not died on me but its rpms have dropped for no reason a few times. I figured since its the temperature sensor that's messed up it might have been dying on me since it was so cold at the time. They told me that replacing the iat(just for the grommet) and the maf sensor would be like 400 bucks.

So, I figure that now might be a good time to upgrade my air intake system. I figure on getting a cai but that doesn’t really solve my problem because I still don’t have the grommet to put the iat into the cai and I still have a hole in my maf. So I'm not really sure what i need to do to fix this. I can replace those sensors if I have to but I do't really know if I have to. Any advice would be appreciated

if you get a new aem intake it should come with a grommet to put into the intake piping. as for your maf go to a junk yard and pick one up or talk to someone here im sure someone has one they arent using.

The AEM doesn't come with a grommet for the IAT sensor, you have to take it out of the OEM airbox.

If you need the grommet, go hit up a local hardware store, they are cheap.

As for the RPM's, sounds like your TPS to me.

Get us some pics. I can't even imagine how anyone could "Just stick the IAT in the MAF". It would break.

Thats the best picture I could get. I didn't want to take the iat out because I would've had to get it stuck back in there. So its hard to tell, but basically what they did was cut a not altogether circular hole and then jam the iat in the hole without a grommet or anything.

Also where do I get a new TPS?

OMG. You didn't do that....really.

You don't put your IAT sensor likt that especially in that MAF sensor housing.

MAF sensor is designed to function within very controlled space and needs specific flow pattern.

You messed up the flow by putting the IAT sensor in the housiing right before or nest to the MAF sensor.

No good!!

My friend, you need a new MAF. The MAF and IAT have to be farther apart, as the MAF needs NON TURBULENT air going into it (Notice the little grid in the MAF? That's to straighten the air out so the MAF gets an accurate reading...). Putting the IAT right there causes a TON of turbulence, and definately is not sealed in there well. Get a new MAF, put it in place, and put your IAT back into the proper spot.

Please, another picture of your entire intake system, so we can help you out more. Remember, don't mess with the MAF at all if you don't HAVE to.

As for the TPS, look at your throttle body and see what the MFR's name is on the sensor on the side of it. If it's Dae Sung, you need the Keifco, as the Daesung goes bad. There is a TSB for this at Hyundai, and they will replace it for free.

$400 is a total rip off..

If you have the money, spend it on an AEM CAI.

If you want the cheap fix, go get a new grommet and install the IAT properly, and make sure that the MAF is not backwards, the arrow should be facing the direction of airflow.

And check what kind of TPS you have, if you have a Dae Sung, change it, because if it isnt now, it WILL cause problems. Get a KEFICO brand TPS.

I didn't do that actually. The previous owner did. I may have been stupid enough not know that it was a problem but I wouldn't have been stupid enough to just go cutting random holes in things without knowing what they were.

I will order a aem cai and get a new maf, and I'll get more pictures and check the TPS tomorrow once its light.

This makes me wonder about my exhaust system too since I know the thats not stock. I fear the previous owner messed that up too.
