I know 2003 was one of the years and I believe 2002 for elantra there was also 2002 tiburons that offered the noncvvt setup as well.

I wish someone would make an all inclusive engine and trans sticky on here so the info would be easier to figure out. especially with important figures and facts. like hp torque, final drive ratios. specific changes regarding to strengths and weaknesses. etc.

Slow your roll. How do you know it isn't just time for an oil system flush and oil change with an OEM filter? Hyundai B1 engines are notorious for hydraulic lash adjuster noise with old oil, dirty oil systems and/or especially with FRAM or other non-OEM oil filters.

It could also be that you need a new set of HLAs, which don't require any gaskets to be replaced, let alone pulling the engine!

I am not normally of the person who says change unnessary items just because. But the bottom line is he can get a 33000 mile engine for cheaper then most would have to pay to have the HLAs replaced. And if you had to replace each hla cheapest is about 13 a piece after shipping from rockauto. The OP can pull the original engine and probably sell it as is for the price he is buying the other engine. Or he can build it up as he gets the money and have one mean engine build. So where is the down side here? Extra time and effort. If he is working a shop this is the time of year most shops business decrease so why not work on your own stuff while waiting for the next car to come in?

Here's optimoprime's DIY on the beta1 to beta2 swap:

beta1 to beta2 swap

Seems pretty doable with optimo's instructions.

Also, DTN, am I missing something here? But doesn't the beta2 come with CVVT *AND* non-CVVT? Beta2's are found on:

2001-2002 Elantras, and

2003 Tiburons (MOSTLY) - not all of them

I had never heard of Beta 1.5, but if that's the case (I'm not saying it isn't), then these engines can be found on the 1999, and 2000 Elantra.
