General consensus states that 1.8 pistons raise compression to 11.0-1 with an XD head gasket.

Isn't the XD a VVT engine? I'm going to do the conversion soon, but I need to get my facts straight before buying the parts. Will the XD head set work with my Beta2 engine, or will I require Beta2 specific gaskets (such as the valve cover, thermostat housing, etc) and the XD head gasket?

Any idea?

Some XD's are a CVVT, none are a VVT. CVVT started in 2004, and I refer to those as beta 2.5 engines.

You want a NON CVVT beta 2 head, so you need one from a 2001-2003 Elantra or a 2003 Tiburon. That should ensure NO chance of a CVVT head.

The Beta 1 Valve cover and the Beta 2 valve cover are interchangeable, the 2.5 CVVT valve cover is NOT. I don't know what you mean about "head set". Thermostat isn't in the head, is it?

The thermostat is in a separate housing that bolts onto the head.

Guy's, he's not talking about swapping heads here, he's just talking about the gasket. Both of us are planning on swapping 2.0 pistons for 1.8 pistons in order to increase compression, and to do it correctly we also need to use the XD Head -Gasket- because it's thinner then the beta1 or beta2. What he's asking is then what specific year to get that off of, which may have been answered kind of indirectly.

^^ That's alot of work mang. From what I've heard, you'd be best off dropping the engine so that you may work on it more easily. Head comes off from the top and pistons come out from the bottom with the crank removed.

from what i have heard.. at least caj is looking into getting a replacement motor from a local junkyard, so it would be tons easier than doing the work in the car. I think we found the one and only tib in a junkyard in michigan. he better pick it up, cuz its like a 1 in a million chance of getting a local low mileage engine from michigan.

the motor city doesn't have a ton of hyundais running around.

kinda makes me wish i was still in michigan to help with some of jakes upcoming projects.. some of them will be pretty sweet.

Err no...

I removed a crank from a beta2 just 4 days ago and it was a major PITA getting the middle cap bracket off! Plus it involves removing the timing belt, the transmission, pressure plate, flywheel. So basically you are disassembling your whole car for nothing. Plus, most of the times, the crank gear, which just slides onto the crank and on which the timing belt goes, stays stuck like a MF and it needs a ton of convincing to get out. Not fun. Plus, since you are removing the head for the gasket switch already, it's kind of pointless to take them out of the bottom.

You take off the head, the oil pan, unbolt the rod caps from the bottoms, push on the rod, and then pistons come off from the top. It's an easy 4 hour job including gaping the piston rings properly.

Been there, done that.

good catch. i didn't even read his post..

yeah.. you don't wanna take out pistons from the bottom.. MUCH MUCH bigger job than pushing them up through the top of the motor.

you would just need to remove the roll stop X member, oil pan, and 8 rod bolts.

with the head off, simply just push the pistons up and out.

Actually, he asked about gaskets, and the valve cover and the like, so I helped him understand what he's looking for and what will fit what.

Again, to guarantee you get the parts that will work, they need to be for a 2001-2003 Elantra or a 2003 Tiburon.

Those are ALL NON CVVT, so the gaskets, valve covers, everything will fit, even the head if you want it to.

Question, if a 1.8 piston fits in the same diameter hole as a 2.0 piston, the only thing that increases the compression is the length of the piston rod, correct?
