Hyundai has unveiled its Nuvis concept at the New York Auto Show. The vehicle uses Hyundai’s Hybrid Blue Drive architecture, with lithium polymer battery technology. This parallel hybrid drive system mates a fuel-efficient 2.4-litre petrol engine to a six-speed automatic transmission and a 30kW electric motor, for the best possible performance and economy.
The Nuvis can run in electric-only mode and engine-only mode, or use both sources of power, as required. According to Hyundai, this parallel hybrid drive architecture will serve as the foundation for the company’s future hybrid drive vehicles, starting with the next-generation Sonata.
The Nuvis’ engine has been optimised for fuel economy by reducing friction in the driveline and cooling system components. Furthermore, the engine management software automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a halt, cutting emissions to zero. The engine automatically restarts when pressure is reapplied to the accelerator pedal due to the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG). During deceleration, regenerative braking also comes into play to help conserve energy.
