On the same day that General Motors announced that it would be discontinuing talks with Cerberus over a possible purchase of Chrysler, news hits by way of Reuters that a new suitor has sprung up. Wow, that didn't take long. The latest partner is none other than Hyundai, Korea's largest automaker. Not surprisingly, it's the Jeep brand that is again taking center stage according to these initial rumors. Everybody wants Jeep, it seems. If true, the possibility of breaking Chrysler's automotive operations into bits and pieces once again seems like a distinct possibility. What's more, after acknowledging that GM is abandoning talks of a "strategic acquisition," Chrysler's Bob Nardelli may now be back on the phone with Carlos Ghosn, head of the Nissan/Renault juggernaut, along with, presumably, anybody else that's willing to listen and has a pulse. Ford's probably not interested, considering that it has got its own problems to worry about. Today was truly a tough day for all three of America's longstanding automakers.

Well, since they share the World Engine I guess it's not a 100% retarded idea. Unfortunately if anything I think it would lead to more vanilla Chryslers (SRT-nothing) and poorer quality Hyundais.

 

I think Jeep is one of the worst brands out there. They are good for nothing IMO. I can see why some people would like them, but the new ones are just big bland gas guzzlers.
Hyundai should stay away. Jeep loyalists would most likely abandon their jeeps if a Korean automaker bought it since its no longer American...

 

Jeep has their place, but they've forgotten their direction. The crossover POS's they're putting out now are shameful and the new Wrangler is bloated beyond recognition. What I would give for a real CJ and Wagoneer to be in the lineup again...or to be the whole lineup. Even the regular Cherokee wasn't too bad. The Liberty is useless. The Grand Cherokee is pretty cool and all but the SRT-8 version for on the road is lost.

Jeeps should all be solid front axle offroading machines with an optional vinyl interior so you can climb in muddy and hose it out later.

I'm guessing there might be informal discussions going on, but nothing they want in the press yet, so they're denying everything.
