Hyundai recently replaced the European Getz with the i20 four-door hatchback, and is now expanding the lineup with the new 2009 Hyundai i20 two-door hatchback. This latest i20 bows at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show in March.
The new two-door model brings a sportier look to the i20 range, with its distinctive creases and upswept rear-side window. With the sportier look, Hyundai is targeting young professionals and hoping to increase its growing European customer base.
Powering the i20 are several carryover engines from the current four-door hatchback, in addition to a new 1.2-liter gasoline four-cylinder dubbed ‘Kappa.’ The Kappa engine produces 78 hp and 88 ft-lbs of torque. Other notable engine choices include Hyundai’s 1.4-liter diesel engine, capable of attaining 53 mpg on the European combined cycle. All engine choices are available with either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual.
Hyundai uses quick-release memory seats that allow the whole seat to slide forward and the front seatbacks to tip forward and slide back to the original position to make rear seat entry easier. The i20 two-door hatchback is available in all three trim levels offered on the four-door: Classic, Comfort, and Style. Options available include a multi-function steering wheel, keyless entry, and power windows and side-mirrors. To suit the customer base Hyundai is appealing to, ten different exterior color choices are offered.
Making the i20 two-door hatchback even more attractive is its lower starting price than the normal i20. The i20 three-door will become the least expensive i20 model when it goes on sale in Europe in the second quarter of 2009.
