At $23,785 for the R-Spec they're really too closely priced to the competition. At least now they're mostly able to go toe to toe on paper, but the name still doesn't have the same clout as some other automakers. For $21,285 ($2500 less) you can have a Fiesta ST. For $25,170 ($1385 more) you can have the Focus ST. For $24,100 ($315 more) you can have a Civic SI. For $26,415 ($2630 more) you can have a Golf GTI.

There's no question in my mind that I would not choose the Veloster over the competition at the price point given. I really like the Veloster. It doesn't deliver as much as the competition around the same price though. There are a lot of great cars in that price range. All of them do some things better than the Veloster, and several do just about everything better than the Veloster. I see no compelling reason to choose the Veloster. It makes me sad to say that. Maybe the Veloster N will be a different story. Since you can spend over $29k for a Veloster turbo I expect that it'll be in the Civic Type-R category price wise ($34,700), if it is it's an automatic loser in that comparison. Nobody will take it seriously when it comes to actually spending their own money if it breaks $30k.

Maybe I'll go drive a 2019 Veloster turbo and my mind will be changed. It would have to be WORLDS ahead of the 2017 model for that to be the case though.
