Default G4JS swap or G4CS crank swap

Hi, as you may notice Im new to this forum but have been in the Hyundai world (mostly Tiburon world) for almost 10 years now.

Im looking at the possibility of swaping my Beta2 engine with a G4JS 2.4 out of a Sonata... Why? Aside from the displacement the G4JS block and head are almost identical to the famous 4G64 but even better the Hyundai comes DOHC. This wil be a secondary engine I will/would be building for my boosted project.

Looking at the G4JS the engine orientation looks ok since the transmission is on the driver side but there are some things that are not similar to the beta on regards of fitment. For example the starter motor is in the front while the beta has it in the back. The oil filter is in the rear roht corner while the beta has it on the front (nothing that a remote filter setup cant fix) and even after these "minimal" concerns there is the transmission mating part which at this moment Im completely clueless if theyll fit G4JS+Beta2 tranny.

The aftermarket support for beta engines is practically gone while the grass looks waaaaaaaaay greener in the mitsu world for these engine lines.

Ive followed a thread of an Evo 8 with a fully functional G4JS swap and since it shares the bore with the 4g63 and the stroke with the 4g64... Yeap... Cheaper forged internals not to mention cheaper engine and head. Evo engines must be made out of adamantium and gold based on what their owners charge for them.

Well the main question is... Has anyone seen or done this swap into a GK Tiburon Chassis? The car is meant to be daily driven so AC and PS must be kept.

People have asked about swaps like this in the past, and every single answer is always the same...not worth it. For the amount of time and money you would put into it, just getting the engine to sit right in the bay, plus getting a transmission to bolt up (the 2.4 wont fit the beta tranny), and then having an ECU play nice (unless you got a stand alone) would be an insane amount compared to just putting a turbo kit right onto the engine you already have. There is a TON of options to boost a Beta. Also, you have to remember that your entire suspension geometry is going to be ridiculously thrown off with the hybrid engine.

Not sure why you are saying the aftermarket world is gone from the Beta, because you can find just about anything you want or need for that engine in terms of aftermarket performance.

Even though 99.999999999% of the members on here and in the Tiburon community will tell you it's not worth a single penny doing what you want to do. HOWEVER at the end of the day, it's your car and your build. So if you want to put the money and time into, then go for it. Just know that you will have a lot of headaches and not much support because of this, due to the fact that it's much much easier just getting aftermarket parts for your Beta.

if the transmission does not bolt right up, you can always make an adapter plate. i have seen a suzuki swift gt with an accent tranny and a gk beta with mitsu tranny(i think its from a mirage 4g93).

The beta2 engine aftermarket options... Forged pauter rods $900. Forged wiseco pistons... $400. Unless you go with 1.8 rods and piston combo in which case your compression ratio will go down to 7.7:1 ithink it is. I was wondering if it would bolt up easily with minor mods as it is a Hyundai / Kia engine with basically the same layout and it shares internals with the 4G64 for which you can find lets say a set of manley rods for $500, off the shelf ACL bearings etc etc etc... Plus of course the increased displacement.

Im not planing on swaping a 2JZ or a RB26DETT or VQ37 etc etc... So far I've seen 4G63T swaps in Elantras and Delta Tiburon V6 engines on an Elantra too. The G4JS wayyy cheaper than a 4G63T.

Im not trying to justify my build. Im just trying to get some input on specifics or if anybody has tried it, seen it, done it. And for the ECU, yes I would be going standalone.

If I can't go on with this swap idea I'll just keep the boost plan for the Beta with Wiseco pistons, OEM rods and an Evo oem setup.

As for the beta with mitsu tranny I saw that swap on a white Tiburon from puerto rico that is a Beast!!! I couldnt find that thread where he described the swap though.

Thanks for the replies!

The beta is a proven motor. If you're going to go crazy, go all out! But this sounds like a bad idea in the making. If you wan ta reliable Tib, keep it it

It seems like an AWFUL lot of work for an additional 400cc of displacement. Maybe you could, but I wouldn't.

that was tiburon_blanco, i checked the archive here and got nothin so i google searched for info

sorry for the link to NT.com but here it is

http://www.newtiburon.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=204262

as for OPs swap, iirc the sonata has different axle splines so youll probably need custom axles.

so far you are looking at:

engine, trans, pistons, rods, custom motor mounts, custom wiring harness, custom trans linkage, ecu, custom axles, custom exhaust, custom a/c lines, custom ps pump lines.

plus the headache of figuring out stuff like radiator, alternator etc.

sounds like a rather large amount of custom work to get cheaper rods and pistons.

imho, and its probably not what you want to hear:

sell the car.

get something rwd and a larger aftermarket.

ive spent way to much money on this pile of sh*t and at the end of the day its still FWD. anyone whos driven a FWD car with more than 250hp will tell you its hard to put down power

you will spend tons of money

you will be disappointed and ultimately sell the car at a massive loss on both money and time. its why you dont see very many boosted hyundais here anymore.

Yeap. I found a Sirius2 engine today to start looking closely at mount position, diimensions etc.... Not worth it. I guess I was overly enthusiast of been able to bring up somethiing "new" to this platform but it seems that everything has been written in stone for it.

Yeah that was Hector (tiburon_blanco), but didnt know if he was popular outside nt.com haha, thank you for the link!!!

And yes... After all the money invested it will still be a fwd and etc etc all youve already mentioned. Thats why I was looking into an alternate route instead of just paying $1000 fornanset of forged rods. (pisses me of that for the same price you get forged rods, pistons and even bearings in other most common platforms).

Dont get me wrong... I love my Tiburon, but as much as I try to get some rep for this platform....bam... Limitations ruins the day.

I guess Ill just boost it on stock rods, forged pistons until something goes to sh*t... Then fix it or sell it and get a less POS platform like a Genesis (just dont want to be another impreza or evo or worse.... Another civic in the block)

Thank you guys for all the input!

I have nothing extra that hasn't already been said. Turboing a beta will present enough individual problems for you to solve and have fun with anyway.
