Default Engine Swaps

I curious if anyone has done any engine swaps?

The VW's have lots of people that swap their 1.8L 8v to the 2.0 16v or
4 cylinder to the VR6, even a Rabbit can put a VR6 into it.

Has anyone scraped their 1.8 16v tibby for the 2.0L 16v? Maybe their 2.0L 16v for the Sonata's V6?

No real benifit for a 1.8 to 2.0 swap. It would be cheaper to mod the 1.8. Now I would be intrested in seeing someone swapping the 2.4LTR 4cyl in place of the 1.8 or 2.0. The V6 would only fit with extensive structural changes. eek.gif

The added weight of the 6-cyl engine counteracts any performance gains. And, you also use up any room in the engine bay for other modifications.

For the money, installation time, and debugging hassle, you might as well go for a turbo kit. You'd get better gains from it.

Actually, a swap up to the 2.0L may give you more options overall than leaving it at the 1.8L...

The BETA 2.0L motor is by far the strongest motor Hyundai builds. The 2.4L i4 and the 2.7L V6 motors are both very weak in comparison -- thinner rods, weaker pistons, weaker crankshaft, non-girdled main caps, thinner cylinder walls, et al.

People make god-awful amounts of power on the 2.0L motor with a rod and piston upgrade; more power than the transmission and even the chassis can fully deal with. Leave the 2.4L and 2.7L motors alone and aim for the 2.0L motor instead.

You do know that, in Korea where the Sonatas come only with the 2.4L motor (no V6's) they swap the 2.4's for a 2.0L if they want to modify the car for power. Displacement is only as good as the rest of the motor...

So by this note, does that mean that the 2003 tib with the 2.7L V6 will suck if you want to do extensive mods, due to the weakness of the motor?

I wasn't aware that your ecu will work with our cars here in the States. Doesn't your car have a MAF instead of the MAP sensor. Also U.S. cars are required to have OBD II and I don't think yours does. From what I read the switch would be all but impossible. It is the same for cars that are built strictly for the Japan market. The can get insane power because they have fewer "tunning" issues from the beginning.
