Default Changing Trans and Diff Fluid in a manual trans Gen Coup

Review// First I learned that finding the crush washer/gasket/whateveryouwanttocallit for the drain is a PITA. Even the local dealership seemed confused and I had to hand them my smartphone to show them the part number.

Before reading please note: I do not believe in fixes in a can, normally..

Anyway, before the fluid (it looked pretty new coming out, whatever it was they put in it) I didn't have any grinding but it didn't feel that great and I had a common issue with 5th. Coming out of the gear I had to push just a little to the right or it doesn't want to go into a lower gear. I have seen many a QQ about that on GC.com.

After the MT-85 (True GL4 - not universal stuff) (no shockproof since Redline themselves warned about mixing stuff) in the trans an their 75W90 GL5 in the rearend it feels so much smoother. Not just when shifting but at WOT, maybe its all in my head but it feels better as the revs and speed come up.

It cost me just a tick under 80 for the fluids, 3 dollars for the washer, 6 bux for the tube/funnels from Lowes, and about an hour only because I let them drain until nothing was coming out at all. Totally worth it if you have a manual gen coupe... or any other hyundai really. Hyundai trans love that stuff it seems.

The Oil Change//

This was done on a 2010 3.8

Needed:

24mm socket

17mm socket

Socket Wrench

Torque wrench if you are anal

Breaker bar if you are not very big. All but one of those bolts took some torque to remove

Screwdriver (phillips)

funnels (or one if you want to clean it)

oil catch cans

Tube 3/8 ID from Lowes (I found it in the plumbing section)

^- this or hand pump but i didn't want to make a huge mess that is always the result of using my hand pump

3 qts Trans fluid (Recommend Redline MT-85)

2 qts Diff Fluid (Reccomend Reline 75W90 GL5 Gear oil - Open Diff)

4 Jack stands

1 floor jack and some wood... or something to spread the load.

1 X Trans Fill Gasket Hyundai Part Number

QDS17-51116-000

1 X (or 3 if you do what I did) Trans Drain Gasket Hyundai Part Number

21513-11000 (The diff uses the same size but a different metal.. I used them on the diff as well. Gluck getting the right diff gasket numbers. My dealer failed to find the correct part number)

Start, jack it up and set jack stands under it. Make sure its level to get the fluid levels right and LIFT THE FRONT FIRST. Why? The back tires have the trans/parking brake holding it. Lift the back first and I hope you are really on flat ground and/or whatever you have holding the tires hold.

I am pointing at what I used with the jack handle. That is not the radiator support. Make sure you do not try and use the oil pan... I used some wood to spread the load out.

Again pointing at what I used to lift... some say use the diff, they just seemed wrong to me. Wood used on that bar as well.

Then I used the pinch welds for the jackstands.

once it is secured on the stands get drip pans under the trans and the diff. The drain bolts are hard to miss and are both 24m and are facing the ground. Remove the fill bolts as it drains to make it easier to drain. The fill plugs is a 17mm on the PASSAGER side of the trans (the only blot pointing that way and is about half way up) and a 24mm on the DRIVERs side of the diff.

Let it drain...

Replace the gasket/crush washer on the drain plugs and replace. Torque specs on everything is roughly 50lbs.

To fill the diff look in the trunk and move the Styrofoam crap. There is a rubber gasket that is easy to remove. Take it off and drop the tube down that hole into the fill hole on the diff. Fill with about 1.4?? quarts of your favorite GL5!!!! 75W90 gear oil.

blue arrow points to the opening

how the hose routed to it.

For the trans send the tube down to the trans from the battery area from under the hood. You can clearly see the fill bolt/hole from there. Fill with 2.2XX with GL4!!!!! 75W-85 oil (Redline MT-85) I didn't take pics. It is painfully obvious when you look down.

Fill until you see it start to come back out... then let it drain off. Full is just under the fill opening. Replace gaskets and the bolts, both take on around 50lbs of torque. GET THE ASS ON THE GROUND FIRST for the same reasons as before. The car hauling ass on the jack if you lower the front first would be bad.
