Hello:
I just bought the 2010 Elantra Blue last week - still working on the first 600 miles for the engine break in! :-) Unfortunately driving gently and never revving the engine isn't easy to do with the icy road conditions here in Minnesota - especially THIS winter! But I'm doing my best to break her in gently.
My new 2010 2Elantra Blue did not come with the "comfort package" and therefore I need to get the a/c installed this spring. The stereo too but that's no problem - I feel like they did me a favor by not having a stereo pre-installed. Now I can get a better-than-factory-installed system.
On the A/C alone the dealership is telling me it will cost 2k-2.5k?!?!?!?!?
I think this is ridiculous since the "comfort package price - a/c plus the cruise control and radio - is $1700.
Is it possible to get the a/c installed someplace other than the dealership? If so... where would I begin calling to get quotes on how much it will cost to get this done? What type of mechanic shop?
BTW... I'm in the Twin Cities - so a specific referral someplace here would be awesome!!!!!
+++++
Before I get asked the question why didn't I get it installed with the purchase... a family member gave me an interest-free loan to purchase this vehicle and the price of the vehicle plus tax, tag and title - plus the cost of bumping my insurance up to full coverage - was the full amount of the loan I was extended by this family member.
Actually we ended up taking out financing on the purchase only because the bottom price we were quoted was contingent on financing the vehicle. But we'll pay it off with the first payment.
I will be getting enough money in the spring to allow me to pay her back in full AND to get the a/c and a stereo installed (I'm not really interested in the cruise control.)
I had planned to get a new vehicle in the spring - but had to do it now rather than waiting because the trany on my old car died.
But I got this for 3k below MSRP - so I feel like I did well on the purchase - especially considering I don't have to pay interest.
If I have to pay the 2k-2.5k for the a/c I guess I still did okay on this purchase - all things considered... but I would love to get it done for half that price.

If it were me I would pick up the parts used and install them myself. If I didnt know how to then i would still pick them up used and have any reputable service shop install and fill the system. If you go this route make sure the parts you buy were properly capped off to keep debris out of the a/c lines, compressor and condensor. The shop should replace the compressor oil with new and pull a full 30 minutes of vacuum on the system before filling. Most likely the electrical plugs are already there but you will need the a/c button and a belt along with the 3 parts mentioned earlier, there may be more parts but off the top of my head those are the major components. I would imagine you could get all the parts listed above used for a couple hundred bucks but im not sure what the shop will charge you to do the work.

Unless the parts are the same as earlier years and/or different models, used parts may be a challenge to find. I seem to recall that one of our members is a dealer who offers discounts on parts to HA members, you might ask them what they can do for you.
