Hyundai Elantra Forum The Hyundai Elantra Forum. Later models (96-up) of this 4-door share their Beta engines and chassis with the Hyundai Tiburon. Earlier Mistubishi-based Hyundai Elantras (92-95) are perfect candidates for the popular 4g63t motor swap, which turns the Hyundai Elantra into a real sleeper. Default Need thicker head gasket

I replaced my warped head with a rebuilt and now I have valves and pistons touching when it's cold. Also have 240 lbs compression! It was shaved too thin but he claims within it's limits.Looking either for the specs of the original head gasket or a known sourse for a thicker one to restore head to the original height. Thanks for any help..

I *think* the original Beta 1 engine had a thicker head gasket (0.030 vs 0.020). The voices in my head tell me that a Beta 2 valve gasket is a standard choice to raise compression a little tiny bit, being 2 vs 3 layers. See if you can compare an RD gasket to the proper gasket for your model year. Tell the parts counter person you want to have a look at a 2000 elantra gasket. I *think* you may need to make or alter one hole for an oil passage, maybe not.

How much did they shave the head, and was the block cut down as well (if so by how much)?

No the block was fine,I bought the head from a rebuilder in Florida, mine was warped beyond limits.I bought the car not running from an 80 year old man that was told the motor was done, had a leaking radiator in the rain and he ran it till the head gave out. I was hoping to find the original head gasket thickness so I can look for one next size up.Felpro doesn't list the thickness of the one I bought originally.Need to cut this compression down! Runs great but putting 93 octane in this keeps the pinging away but want to get that valve away from the piston.

If you have several hours to kill and don't mind a new idea have a look into Singh Grooves for the pinging.

The head gasket, I think going to a dealership or parts house and comparing them side by side might be informative. Or hey maybe the thickness was mentioned here before - did you search? The search engine can be a little picky, so run several searches with varied keywords.

I found a nice whole engine from 2003.Think I can just swap the whole thing without any mods? Both are non CVVT but wonder if the ECU's are the same.
