Hyundai Elantra GT Hot Hatch Spied Testing at Nurburgring
The Korean automaker has been spied testing a more aggressively styled Elantra GT five-door model at the Nurburgring, hinting at the possibility of a hot hatch from Hyundai with additional performance. Up front, there’s a more aggressive front fascia, sportier wheels and slotted brake rotors. Out in the back is a dual exhaust setup with the rear bumper cut to fit the new tips.
It’s unlikely that Hyundai is gearing up to take on models like the Ford Focus RS, but competition in the hatchback segment is heating up, especially in markets outside the U.S. With the Honda Civic Type R on the horizon and the 345-hp Ford Focus RS looking to dominate the market, Hyundai’s popular Elantra GT model could use more power. The standard 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood providing 173 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque, making it quite standard with the competition.
Perhaps Hyundai is following in the footsteps of its Veloster R-Spec that is powered by a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder engine with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque.
