Hyundai Elantra Forum The Hyundai Elantra Forum. Later models (96-up) of this 4-door share their Beta engines and chassis with the Hyundai Tiburon. Earlier Mistubishi-based Hyundai Elantras (92-95) are perfect candidates for the popular 4g63t motor swap, which turns the Hyundai Elantra into a real sleeper. well if you have the 2 litre beta you can swap it with the 1.8 litre beta cam witch is higher then teh stock semi high cam.

they are fairly cheap and can be bought through your dealer or possably shark racing.

It is only the 1.8L Elantra (96-99) cam The 1.8L tiburon cam is the same as the 2.0L

It is the intake cam only. Exhaust cams are all the same in all betas.

The new 2001 Elantra intake cam is even better, but folks...keep in mind, you are talking about maybe...maybe 3 HP for this mod.

The 1.8L Elantra cam has only .4mm more lift and 2 degrees more duration
The 2001 2.0L Elantra cam has only .8mm more lift and 4 degrees more duration.

If you want more power...performance camshafts are the way to go...not stock cams from other motors. We are talking about very small changes...the stock valve lift is 9mm. adding an additonal .4 or .8 isn't going to make that much of a change. and 4 degrees of duration is not much either. Neither cam will show a gain untill above 4000 RPM, and even then...only about 1-4 HP to the wheels.

Performance cams should be good for 5-15 HP to the wheels. When you consider the cost of the cams...and the cost of installing them (or your time if you do it yourself), you might as well get some REAL performance cams for your Money/time.

Random, how much are these performance cams? and how hard is the install? Do you have to replace other stock components like springs and such?

The Performance cams can be purchased from HVE, RPW, HDK (shudder), and...hopefully when boogyman get us the specs...Shark Racing.

The Cam manufacturer can tell you if they should work with your stock springs, but 90% of them can, it takes a fairly agressive cam to require new Valve springs.

New stiffer Valve Springs are available from HVE and RPW.

In order of things to do...

Cold Air Intake
Bored TB
Bored Intake Manifold
Headers
Full Exhaust
CAMS

Right after that you would probably benefit from an S-AFC to make all of the mods work together with and to fool the stock ecu into dumping more fuel when needed and lean things out where needed.

Then you get into the complicated things of port/polish work in the head, and either Nitrous or Turbo or Supercharger.

I should point out the 1.8 cam really does work well, .4mm and 2 degrees may not sound like much but 2 hp to the wheels helps. The 2001 cam may help ,ore but wait a bit to see how hlas like it. Remember that the 1.8 cam is very MILD and if you run into trouble under warranty dealers will not notice it ( same with 2001 cam ) but the performance cams are a dead give away if you are under warranty. the duration and lift are not the only factoers in cams, the 1.8 cams gives a nice pull right off the line and 4500 rpm you actually do feel it . performance cams do more.
