Variations between identical models

Well, this is just an interesting difference between my 2003 Accent GT and my friend's 2003 Accent base model. The entire drivetrain should be identical (correct me if I'm wrong) but the two cars offer entirely different driving experiences. My car loves to rev high. It pulls hard all the way to about 6100rpm's. If you want to drive it fast you've got to push it up to around 6000 rpm's when you shift to get the most out of it. This is entirely different than my friend's Accent, it loves shifting in the 4500rpm range and power drops off dramatically after that.
I don't think his car is necessarily slower than mine, just has a very different power curve. We have raced and I'm a bit faster but only by an amount that could easily be contributed to driving skill. One thing that really shows the difference is the low rpm torque. I have very little. If I shift into a higer gear too soon my car lugs badly, while that's the sweet spot for his car.
Only modifications I have that effect performance is an axle back exhaust with a canister style muffler and a short ram intake. The SRI accentuated this effect slightly, and the exhaust made very little difference. This condition existed before I modified anything on the car though.
Anyone else have similar experiences to this or a good explanation why two identical engines would run so differently? It's enough different that I have considered shelling out the cash to dyno both cars to see the curve on paper.

I have an 05 GT and my car loves to rev, it may only have 110 HP at the flywheel but if i punch it at 55 MPH itll drop all the way to second gear on my auto trans and redline at 6500 RPM and this sucker pulls hard at 6 grand.

Hmm...if there is a difference I would be interested to know what it is. Have you driven a non-GT LC2 Accent to compare? My shifter engagement feels totally different too.
I've gotten in nasty arguments over where the proper shift points are on the Accent based on my car and I may have been way wrong for the typical Accent. unsure.gif

They are at least officially the same, but it's not like I've been inside my engine, know what cams are installed, or know what programming my ECU holds. I kind of suspect it has something to do with me driving my car hard starting soon after the break-in period and my buddy driving his like a grandma the whole time, but I'm really not sure how it would make this much of a difference.

How you break-in the engine to your driving style has alot to do with how your vehicle will perform throughout its life. I gave my car a 500 mile breakin of driven like a grandma, then once i hit that I went back to my style of driving, which is redlining ever gear LOL. drive.gif Ive never had any problems with my car lugging, but that could be the auto trans.

Yeah, mine only lugs when I shift into too low of a gear. It's just that "too low of a gear" is relative because it's fine in the buddy's car.

I like the Accent the way it is, it's quick and liking to rev means I can drive it the way I like to drive.
I've got a plan for a fun project Accent, but I'm not doing it to this one. Still gotta buy the extra LC or LC2, a Theta engine, figure out how to get it mounted and running, and then actually do it. I'm just hoping to have the time soon and the cash available. I will start off with 170hp N/A, and depending on what things cost me go up from there.
This is well off into the future, but I have some preliminary plans sitting here on my desk and the full intent of making it work. I figure it will easily be a $7,000 project though doing the work myself, so it may be a while. I haven't even got the car for the project yet. I've been looking for an Accent with a blown engine or tranny in the area though. I'll find one. I've passed up on low mileage Thetas out of totalled Sonatas for now trying to decide if I want to go with the N/A 2.4l or go with a turbo Theta from the Caliber SRT-4 and try to get it shoehorned in with a standalone. Gotta imagine aftermarket support for the SRT-4 will be incredible though, and that makes that engine an even better choice. 300hp would probably be more than I want even though in reality. I don't want a dedicated drag car.
If it all goes south and I can't fit the engine in the Accent I'll make a dune buggy or something. No harm done. I think it will though, it fit under the hood of the Accent SR. I'll make a thread on my plan once it gets closer to reality to take pointers.

well 187sks, i dont know about you guys in in the states, but i do know that for 2003 the gt or gsi here is canada, came with the 1.6 dohc and the gs came with the 1.5sohc, i have driven no gt/gsi cars and they are different
if i am not mistaken the redline for the gt/gsi is 6500 and the no gt/gsi it 6000
might make a little difference there,
