quick question.
Recently I have been lookin to swap in a beta engine into my 97 accent. I have found 3 beta engines all 3 are from elantras and a elantra gls. Recently the owner of the junk yard towed in a 2000 accent that has been totalled in the rear or the car. The engine runs and has only 67,000 original miles on it. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what engine this could possibly be. It looks like a beta 1 but im not sure. He said I can have it for 200 bucks but i wanna make sure its something I can use.

It is more than likely the 1.6l Alpha. At a glance it looks pretty similar to the Beta. Definitely a lot different than the 1.5l SOHC Alpha.

So would this elantra GLS wagon have a beta 1 or 2 in it? I found another at a diffrent junkyard with a good engine. For some reason I cant find a regular elantra sedan.

1996-2000 Elantras have the Beta I that is the easiest swap for you. But, some of them are the 1.8l, some are the 2.0l. Also, 1997-2001 Tiburons it's the same story.

Well Im almost positive the guy said it is a 2002 so I guess it has the beta 2. Is that the one with ccvt? Im going tomorrow to start yanking it out. Im trying to hunt down a tib tranny as well but since im running low on cash I may just have to use the accent tranny. I hope I read right, but dont I need a 1.5 s-coupe turbo clutch in order to keep my stock accent tranny?
If someone could give me a quick run down of everything I am going to need, I would appreciate it.
So far all I think I will need from this donor car is the engine and ECU. The tranny is junk because its a automatic.

It shouldn't have CVVT, as faith said.
Unless you're re-wiring everything the 02 Elantra's ECU is worthless to you. It won't plug into your wiring harness. You can use the ECU from a RD/RD2 Tiburon or a J2 Elantra. Same years as listed above. They will however, not be intended for that 2.0l, because it's a Beta II.
This is the best Beta swap DIY. It's for a LC Accent, but the mechanical parts of the swap are the same, just ignore the electrical because if you get the right engine it's a non-issue for you.
The Beta I ECU won't run the Beta II engine without a LOT of extra work.
Unless you love headaches and money pits don't get that engine.

I think that I might still have ecm pinouts of both your 97 accent and a 02 elantra. If the 97 accent plug doesnt fit the 02 elantra ecm then grab the ecm plug from the elantra and about 10 inches of wire coming off of the plug. You should be able to swap one wire at a time to wire in the beta ecm plug. If you want them let me know and I will see if I still have them.
