A lot. Shipping, plus certifications. The voices in my head say you have to be able to get it up to US safety and emissions standards. It might be cheaper to convert to RHD than try to bring a car over.

That's because people with motorized seatbelts are slapped by old women and children for having motorized seatbelts. With canadanadians getting health care paid for by the state, and considering all the costs of treating injured faces from slaps because of motorized seatbelt-equipped car ownership, it was just cheaper to ban that kind of belt outright.

very nice writeup! i loved all of the previous trims, and the swirl caps and front bumpers were awesome. is it possible you know anything about the 4-door version too? they were very popular and well received in Europe.

by motorized seatbelts, do you mean those crazy belts that are attached to the door, and slide around the door when you get in and out?
HKC, i'm currently researching the four door. this is definitely not the definitive guide just yet. from what i can see, the four/five door followed the major trim changes of the three doors, with the exception of the unicorn nose FL. i think they still changed from triple swirl to penta swirl wheel covers at the same time, but kept the original four door nose. it does make identifying the specific year a little harder though.
btw man, if you can share any model info from yuurp, i'd much appreciate it. there aren't as many european members on here, so there isn't as much general discussion to steal model info from. is it the same as america with L, GSi, GT?

okay, i've been doing a little more poking around. I haven't got enough info and photos to make a full photo grid as yet, but its getting there. Hyundai australia was only able to supply me with the attached brochures, they look like they were for the 98 year model. I know that they changed to the DOHC engine somewhere between 8/97 and 12/97. its going to take alot more trawling though. Stay posted!
here are the links for the brochures:

peace!
*EDIT* It looks like 97 was a busy year. The unicorn to DOHC face lift, and the SOHC to DOHC conversion both occurred in the one year. Seems like hyundai was testing the early DOHC alpha in the US in the 97 GT, then producing a revised edition a little more in australia in late 97, then rolling out production in the 1.6 LC in 2000. makes sense, just testing the waters and getting all the production tolerances up to spec.
