Default belt dressing

Wanted to get the opinion of the HA pros. Is belt dressing basically snake oil or is it good to use on belts? I know if your belts are worn, then the best thing is to just get new ones. Does dressing extend the life of them if you use it on a regular basis?

It works temporarily. Softens the rubber. Sort of liquefies it, and it gets everywhere. Overall, worst solution to fixing a slipping belt with the exception of severely overtightening it.
