Default 2 Things... Torque Converters and my 'cat back ' exhaust...

My Accent is a automatic with the Torque Converter engaged. A friend of mine at work and I have gotten into arguements concerning what the heck it is. I am under the impression that its purpose is to limit the amount of torque that reaches the wheels when you floor the car from a static position, or rev it in nuetral and drop it into low gear. Am I right? He seems to think that it is when he accelerates to 70 KPH, when he hits 70, the car is in second gear, if he remains at this speed the car will jump up to fourth, thus dropping the rpms. Which one is it?
Secondly, I took my car into the MUFFLER MAN to get my cat back installed. While I was waiting, the guy who was doing the job came at got me. My car was hoisted up, so as we looked at the bottom of the car he said, *Instead of paying $150 to have us replace this pipe with one of a larger diameter, why don't we just cut this resonator out, and weld in a straight pipe...* He explained that since the catalytic converter is right behind the exhaust manifold, {where it bottle necks} I would get better results just taking out the resonator... So what was going to cost me $150, cost me instead a mere $20. And he was right, my exhuast is about four times louder, and for 7 times less the cost I though I was going to have to pay...
Some thing for you guys to think about any way.
eek!

I have no clue were to begin, you are talking about torque converters and exhaust system and to two are NOT related.

A torque converter replaces the flywheel assmebly in a manual car. A torque converter has fluid it in, which spins when the engine starts to spin faster. This move ment of fluid allows the automatic to change gears, and the shaft turning is the same as the manual car turn to direct the power to the wheels.

got to that website, it explains how a torque converter works with a bunch of nice pictures smile.gif

concerning your resonator removal. Yes it will be louder thats all a resonator does, its quiets things down. But they are rather free flowing. I doubt that helped much at all. You need a bigger piping and not crushbent. I believe the exhaust is 1.75 in an accent you should go 2.0 mandrel bend or 2.25 crush bent.

Shaddoh, is it really going to matter what the diameter of the pipe is behind the cat??? The cat is the narrowest point on the exhaust as far as I know, it can only allow so much to pass through it at any given time, a larger pipe does not seem like it would make a difference. Maybe I should ask Random... tongue.gif
