Default What can I use to remove paint from plastic without destroying the plastic?

Well it's in the title I want to remove the paint on my dash and I don't want the plastic to melt or bubble etc.. So I need some help. I have to do this to have my dash repainted and really don't want to spend the money to get another dash assembly. Thanks in advance.

So you want to remove the old paint to repaint it?

Hmmmm.... what color is it now? Will you be repainting it a darker color or lighter color? You may just want to prep the old color by sanding and then add more coats of the new color.

I don't think you will be able to get the dash completely paint-free without damaging the plastic surface. Anything strong enough to take the paint off will also affect the plastic.

Give me a few more details.

The dash is going to be base coat/ clear coated like the outside of the car but the body shop said that the primer they are going to use some kind of adhesive primer for troubled plastics will peel up the paint since the paint is chipping it is said it weakens the plastic just a bit so the paint can get a good bite on it so that is why I need to get the paint off.

try mineral spirits. It is sorta weak, but if used in conjuction with fine steel wool, it should remove the paint, and give the plastic parts a good slightly rough texture for the paint to hold on to.

If you use anthing harsher, it may melt the paint. Also check hobby stores. See what they reccomend for getting paint off plastic models. If it is safe for plastic models, it should be safe for your interior.

Lastly...be sure to test in a small, out of the way area first, just in case it does something horrible!

Ask 2k Lo&Show, he knew of a solution that will get the paint off. I removed the first paint job with a razorblade. Tilt it at the right angle and it takes it off nicely. Don't tilt it too much or it scratches the plastic.
