Transaxle Seal failed!
Hey guys,
I don't post much on here but I need your opinions, two days ago I was driving down the street and it was almost like a car hit me from behind, a really loud klunk and bang then everything went fine again. I was very close to home so I drove the extra 30 seconds to my house and checked under the car to realize there is some dark black crap leaking out(which I assume to be gear oil). I believe I lost a transaxle seal, but I am not sure. There are no Hyundai dealerships within 600KM's so I would like to know what you guys think. Can it be anything else? I can't get up under the car due to the -40 degree temps and the 2 feet of snow. your opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Can you identify the fluid? Is it gear Oil or Motor oil?
That "hit from behind" feeling probably means you either something inside the transmission punched a hole out the side, or something in the engine punched out the side of the block (not likely).

gear oil is normally clear, like motor oil. So color is not a great indicator.
You should be able to identify it by smell. Gear oil usually has a very strong odor to it. It doesn't smell like motor oil.
Worse case, you've got a 2000. Call the Hyundai 1-800 number. Hyundai warranty and roadside assistance should cover the tow to the nearest dealership, even if it is 600KM away for a warranty repair like that. Either that, or they might be able to give you some options on places closer to you to get it fixed, at their expense.

I took random's advice and called Hyundai Canada. The first time I called I talked to an ******* who said he couldn't help me. The second time I called I talked to a french girl who was of great help. She talked to the customer service manager, called me back and told me to get my car towed to the garage of my choice to get an estimate. Then she told me when I get the estimate to call Boulevard Hyundai in Baie Comeau, PQ with the problem and the estimate. So last night my car was towed, this morning I got the call from the garage saying it was my tranny. Something let go inside and came out through the side of it. (Good guess Random) So I might be without my car for a couple of weeks waiting for a tranny to come in, but at least it is being covered under warranty. If anyone has to call Hyundai Canada, talk to Caroline she was a great help!
Thanx guys,

Jesterday-
I'm sorry to hear that it was your transmission, but I'm glad to hear that you got some help from Hyundai Canada (eventually).
I would reccomend that you call them again, and ask to talk to a supervisior and mention the great service you got from Caroline, and the bad service from the other person. They do track that kind of stuff, and hopefully will get rid of the bad person.
I wish you continued luck in getting your tranny problems resolved.

Hey guys,
Another update:
Caroline at Hyundai called me yesterday morning to update me on where my tranny was. She said it will be in Baie-Comeau next Thursday and they will ship it to Sept-Ilse where it will be put on a train to here! So I will be without my car for at least another 2-3 weeks...but what can ya do when you live in Labrador!
Another note. They said my tanny went because I spin my tires too much. When your tires spin it wears out the pin in the rear diff and when that pin breaks it causes a lot of trouble. They also told me that this usually isn't a warranty issue because it is caused by abuse to the car. So if you like to spin your tires then I'd advise you to stop it. But on another note I drive on ice covered roads 6-8 months of the year so I didn't really try to spin my tires, it just happens!
Anywho, Thanx for the help guys, I'll Chat later!
