alright, me an my good luck
today,... i was driving and all of a sudden i tried to shift to 2nd gear, and i couldint. It felt like if there was a giant gummy bear inside. Sometimes i couldint get it into 4th or 3rd. I finally got pissed and forced it into 2nd. It seemed to finally solve the problem. I came home and relaxed. I decided to go out like 3 hours laters. After 20 min of driving, the car started acting up. When i would make a hard right or left i would hear a single bang,... I ignored it.
3 min later, the sound got louder. After 2 more min i smelled something burning. I got scared and went straight home. On the way home, the car kept studdering while in gear. The studders go worse and worse. By the time i got to my dads, i noticed there was a long trail of drops of oil (not sure what since it was dark).
If anyone can please help, I will not be looking under until tommorow morning since its dark. Im worried, i already have to deal with an insurance company since a tree fell on my car 3 days ago. Is there a hose that could have busted loose and let out transmission fluid??? Can someone tell me how to check it since im unfamiliar with manual transmissions.
Thanx

This is just an educated guess here....
When you hit the tree, you busted a seal on the manual tranny. You've been slowly leaking gear oil fluid since then. When the gear oil got low, it became hard to shift. That was your first clue. When the shifting got really hard and you smelled smoke...that was a BAD SIGN. Something in there went south. It probably either punched a hole in the gear case, or it just levered the gear case open wider, and the rest of your fluid went bye bye (large oily drops you saw).
You will need to get your tranny serviced. You might get lucky and just need a new seal, but those loud BANGing noises you heard were the other sign that something horribly wrong was going on, and something tells me you need at least a rebuild, possibly a new (or used rebuilt) manual tranny.
Keep your service records...take this out of the DOT's hide. They should pay for this, it was their damn tree that fell on you/you hit.

well heres what i found out today
i check the transmission oil,... its ok
the liquid that was dropping was clearish and seemed to be mixed with grease
the oil is coming out from the thing that sticks into the transmission from the disc, rims, tires, ect
sorry for the non technical talk
while the car is off an was raised
we rolled the tires and it made some noise from inside the transmission like if something was broken
when the car is going in a straight line it makes an awful sound (like if something is broken) once every rotation (of tire rim ect)
also something weird
when we had the car raised,... i turned it on
the weird part is,... the front tires were moving WHILE IN NUETRAL!?!?!?
i dont remember that being normal
im thinking its the rack and pinion, but then again i dont have half the knowledge of the supreme minds in here
i guess im going to have to live with the damage the tree did to my car, since ill be using the money to finance what ever is wrong with my car.
sad.gif
thanx random for the help
the insurance wont cover it since the damage was done under the car. I dont want them to think some of the tree went under, since that might indicate that i hit a tree on the road as opposed to the tree landing on me.
Also my factory warranty just ran out 6000 miles ago sad.gif
anybody want to trade dashboards??? wink.gif
too bad the stupid ECU will give me off. sad.gif

does anybody know how much a tranny retails for??? at the dealer???
im trying to prepare for the worst now. If its the whole tranny, ill be installing it myself at the airforce base with some help from my bro and his friends.
i guess i should buy an upgrade clutch, just so i can feel better and continue my need for speed since im really thinking about scrapping my mods an going stock now. sad.gif
by the way, when i checked the transmission oil, there was a small sheet of torn metal sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif
so the tranny will most likely have to go.
Can anyone shed some light???
too make matter worse, the guy who is going to tow my car to the dealer was talking **** about hyundais. This is really going to make him crack up. Atleast the towing will be free though.
Random, is there a place around here that is trustworthy with transmissions??? Whats that transmission specialist place??? MAaco???amco???
anything to save a buck

Okay, if the part that is leaking is where the halfshaft connects to the differential, you are doing good.
The differential shelled itself. DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR. You've got broken teeth, or a loose pin in there and it's causing damamge. The less you drive it, the better.
Any transmission shop should be able to rip it apart and take care of it for you. If it is something simple, expect about $200 in parts and labor (maybe less, or as much as $800 parts and labor.
Either way, you need to get it looked at by a qualified transmission mechanic, or a qualified Hyundai Mechanic.
I would also want this work done by a qualified mechanic because you want it DOCUMENTED that the tree you hit caused the damage, so when you go after the DOT, they will pay for it...or they better.
You also might want to contact your insurance company...not to make a claim, but to ask for advice as to how file a claim against the DOT yourself to get the cost of the repairs covered.

ok,...
im having a former mechanic look at it today (hes not fixing it, just looking for what it might be)
i dont think ill be taking it to the dealer, since i also want to have my dents removed.
It will be very hard to tie the tree to the tranny,... if i give the insurance company any indication that a big chunk of the tree went under the car, they will find me liable. If they find me liable my insurance will go higher than it already is ($185 per/m)
I am not going to mention this to the insurance company, but i am going to screw them over on the body stuff. I will be doing most of the sanding myself so ill save some $$$. I just really need the mirror.
Please dont get upset, but whats the DOT???
I really cant sue anybody since the accident was weather related. Maybe i would be able to sue if it was on the road lying around (which under the insurances eye would make me liable).
well im going to see what the mechanic says, ill post something when i get back
thanx random

DOT = Department of Transportion. I forgot that in Cali they call int CALtrans.
You should be able to get CALtrans to pay for all the damage to your car, even if you drove over the tree. It was their tree on their freeway that hit YOU!
