steering wheel assembly
Just wondering if this is normal if not help. We have a x3 1998 excel. We gutted the car and are now putting it back together so far so good. Only one question when we put the steering wheel on we can actually push and pull the wheel. It moves up and down about 3cm. Did we break something or just forget to put a piece back in to stop this happening. The wheels still turn there is no noise. What is wrong?

Did you have to use a puller to remove the wheel?
All i can think is that its a press fit and you need to get the wheel on all the way before you tighten the nut. Or its something internally inside the steering column and or shaft.
Its hard to say without being there you know? I would disassemble and inspect, and reassemble.

No they did not use the puller at first. Our friend just gave the wheel a good ol yank.

Strange.. Yeah i dunno.. Maybe it had always done that. I know the one in my car moves about 2cm, and it always has, and all the other cars ive been in that same vintage has as well. Eh..

Yeah maybe it always has. I can always take it to a mechanic we know and have him check it out. Just didn't wanna drive it and be turning a corner and have it decide it didn't want to and go straight. Just want it back on the road as soon as possible. Just need to hear that sweet LOUD music from the new system. Cheers for all ur suggestions wink.gif

Hey no problem. Run the wheel back and forth a bunch before it leaves the driveway. I don't think a little play up and down is going to cause any major problems, as long as everything is tight then your probably golden

Yeah can't wait been fixing the car for about 3 weeks now. It has been fun. Got a huge bruise on my butt. We will definately do that. And hopefully our mechanic wont charge to much to have look just to make sure. And then we will post a heap of piccy's. Definately piccy overload when we do. Will let you know if all is good.
