speedo not working on rd1
99 tibby:
so i was installing led's inside my switches.. i mounted one in the cruise control and just set it like the stock bulb was. i started the car and hit the cruise control button to see if it lit up blue.. and i heard a pop and smoke came from the swtich i checked my led and it blew up.. so i didnt do the indicator lights on any of the switches and finished my install well since then the speedometer hasnt worked. Idk if i could of messed up the speedometer itself or maybe the speed sensor or maybe a blown fuse??? ive checked all the fuses i could find and none blown. the tech and all the other gauges work.. just now the speedometer any help would be awesome.. any way to test some things to see wat i destroyed?? thanks |
Make sure the connector isn't loose on the back of the cluster.
IDK about the RD1 but some clusters have fuses in the cluster, might have blown one there. I've never had an LED go up in smoke. Lots go out, but never with smoke. I am concerned that you may have shorted something out and burned up some wiring. It's sort of OT, but you use the proper resistor for the LED? Either way that won't solve the speedo problem... |
I have a Rd1 and my speedo stopped working, luckly i have a kick ass guide, with wiring diagrams for the harness, the first place you would want to start looking is the fuses under the hood, there is a relay for the windshield wipers/speedo. ( this will make sense in a minute i promise). Then from there, there is the electric motor for the windshield wipers, which is located on the fire wall, right about the 90 degree elbow for the throttle body. make sure the connector is good, then simply see if the windshield wipers work! (reason being, is that the power for the speedo, runs in the path of the wiper motor, so if the wiper motor shorts, you then have a bad speedo. or atleast the apperence of one.) if the wipers dont work, unplug the electric motor, then grab a multi meter, and see if you are getting 12 volts to the motor of course the if your not, either the relay is bad, or you pinched a wire and it is shorting to the chassis of the car!
In my case, it was raining and i was running the wipers, and the wipers went out and i was trying so hard to find out why they died, then three days later i went to drive somewhere and realized my speedo stoped working, that is when i decided to invesigate. |
The fuses were reportedly checked, but I would have said: the first place to look is where you changed something. Put the bulb back in. Still have the problem?
You guys haven't tinkered enough if you haven't popped/smoked an LED. Sometimes it's just shy of an all-out FIRE when they go. |
I've done probably 500+ LED's and never had one go up in smoke. I've had a couple of 10mm LED's explode though, that was fun.

ah, then you mean "done" as in "done properly" laugh.gif
I meant more along the lines of "hey let's see what happens when the ol' high current variable voltage supply is cranked up . . . " |
thanks guys.. ill check the wipers.. i have tried them since... i checked fuses, but not any relays.
it was a 12v led and i tried to hook it up te same way teh stock bulb was... and it popped. all my leds are ran off a seperate wire right now.. so the gauge cluster wouldnt know any difference. as far as the cluster knows.. there isnt any bulbs. I dont think that should casue a problem though. |
ok i just checked the wipers.. and they dont work
i looked at the fuse panel under the hood and i ddint see any wiper motor relay.. maybe they abbreviated it weird.. or im just tired lol.. so i guess i need to check for voltage at that switch.. is this the one ur talkin about?? https://i984.photobucket.com/albums/...rts/switch.jpg |

Due to OSPEC they will let me get on the site, but they block pictures. Yet it is very easy to spot, it is a rather odd guy, looks almost like a window motor, it is just to the left of the brake booster if you stand in front of the engine bay looking at the fire wall, the first thing i would do, is just take a DMM if you got one, and see if your getting the tweleve volts, if you are and they still no worky, then that motor has blown. Pretty simple as long as you have some basic electronic skills, and understanding of how to use the DMM correctly and understand what the reading is telling you, if you arent getting and voltage, you can OHM that line to see if it shorted to the Chassis, put one lead in the power wires place, then simply put the other into the slot of the relay. this will tell you if the wire is shorted to the car. also you can OHM out the relay, or if you understand how the relay works you can just get two pieces of spare wire, hook them up to the terminals of the battery, then touch them accordingly to the relay, should have 3 prongs, i think i remember... the relay will have the positive and negative marked, make sure you apply them correctly, this will break the relay if done backwards. when you touch the relay you should hear, or possible even feel the relay CLICK, that is what you want, that is good! So let me know what you find out, and i can help you with the reading if need be!!!! |
You've circled the wiper motor gear box
