Default oil in plug holes

Got a question, yesterday I was changing my plugs and noted that there was oil in the #1 plug hole. I was about to buy a valve cover gasket when I noticed that there is a metal sleeve that goes to the top of the plug hole. If there isn't plug gaskets that come with the valve cover where could the oil be coming from. Just wanted an idea before I take the cam cover off. It's a 97 Tib with the 1.8.

Thanks

how much oil was in there?

If it was just trace ammounts, it's nothing to worry about and fairly common.

If the spark plug well was FILLED with oil (I've had it happen to me) then yeah, you need to replace the rubber seals around the metal sleeves. they mount on the underside of the valve cover.
