Hey guys I have a 2001 Tib and im having problems getting it started. I already replaced the battery (had it tested at my local autoparts store) and recently replaced the fuel pump and relay. I replaced the pump after removing the fuel line to the fuel rail and noticing no fuel coming out. I still have not checked spark, will do that tomorrow. Does anyone have any input as to what I should try next? Any input would be appreciated.

btw car does crank over, but does not start.

 

Replace the CKP sensor. Its the crank position sensor, not sure about why the acronym. It goes bad, and causes the exact symptoms you're saying. Two tiburons did that to me.

 

CPS = Cam position sensor
CKP = Crank position sensor

When I had my tranny replaced, the CKP was loose and the car would only start when cold. If I drove somewhere and the engine was hot, it wouldn't start up again until it cooled down. Made it hard when I towed it to Hyundai and it started right up for them.

Check that sensor, it's caused problems for many members.

Do you get fuel to the filter? It might not make it to the rail if the filter is totally clogged

The crank sensor can be loose, have bad wire connections, melted or partially melted wires, or it can even have a dirty connection to the engine block. Really give it a good looking-at.

 

if there is no fuel at the rail, thats your problem. Like stocker said it might be your fuel filter.

i would crank it over once with it connected to make sure, best bet is to get a pressure gauge on it.

 

Thanks for the help so far guys. I will definitely check the cam and crank sensors today for proper connection.

I still have not ruled out a fuel issue either. Is it possible for a clogged filter to not show any prior signs?

I'm going to remove the intake pipe and spray some carb cleaner down the intake to see if it starts that way. If it does, I will proceed to replace the fuel filter.

 

FYI, if the crank position sensor is bad, fuel won't be moving.

 

Thanks, that is definitely good to know. Can someone point me in the right direction of where to find the crank position sensor? Im assuming close to the crank.

 

Behind the header under the coolant tube/elbow. It has one bolt.

Update: After I replaced the fuel pump the car still did not want to start. Yesterday I sprayed some starter fluid into the intake and the car turned on. I've been driving it for the past day and a half with no issues. One thing though, the gas gaugue is no longer working - I'm going to pull the pump out once again and see if I placed something in incorrectly.
