Need help...please!!
Can you describe the thunk sound a little more?
Like, general area where it's coming from? Loud thunk or low volume thunk? It ONLY happens right before you stop completely?
We need a little more info to help determine what the issue might be. wink

If you are free friday night, and are willing to drive to LAX (or near there) I could take a look at it for you.
Without really hearing the "thunk", im not sure I can help you.
You could have a bad/broken motor mount, or mount bolt, but that would also show up under acceleration (another "thunk"). Could be something wrong with the brakes (mis-installed pads, air in brake lines, bad fluid, pads nearly worn out), or it could be something suspension related.
Can you "feel" the thunk...
in the steering wheel?
In the floor of the car through your feet?
In the seats (via your hindquarters)?
Does the car vibrate at speed? Does it vibrate during breaking or cornering?

My friend had a THUNK in his manual, on deaccelaeration.
It was the automatic PSCV plug went bad.
Its one of the pressure controls for changing gears.
Hyundai knows about. And they pretty much just took it , after the description and after about 45 mins, we got it back. And it was good.
Eventually if you leave it a CEL should come up. Cause the harness wil continue to detoriate.
His was a 2000 Auto.
since yours is a 2001. and if its nearly stock. I would just take it the dealership.
its what a warranty is for.
