intermittent starting problem
Having intermittent problems with starter not wanting to turn over once every 15-20 trips or so.
But never in my garage where I can troubleshoot it.
Things I've tried:
New starter
New battery
Alternator is charging battery fine
New battery terminals
New starter relay
Checked grounds and starting circuit connections for corrosion.
Clutch switch is good, even tried shorting wires to make sure.
When it does it, all lights dim almost completly out when ignition is turned, all accessories continue to work in ACC position.
Relay clicks once but does nothing.
Bump starting car works fine, then the next 15-20 or more trips it starts fine.
Could it be the ignition switch maybe?
Thanks for your time, any ideas appreciated!

If the lights are dimming, something is drawing lots of current. This means a possible short to ground. It is possible your ignition switch is the culprit, also check the wiring especially where it goes thru the firewall. Do you know about hyundaitechinfo.com?

Thanks Stocker, I downloaded the schematics from HMA Service and have been tracing out circuits and pulling
on the wiring harness on several attempts for a couple of weeks now to try to reproduce the problem while measuring with a Fluke meter but I just can't reproduce it.
I read every post I can find and only one said anything about dimming lights and it was his corroded battery terminal.
Not my case here though.
Funny thing, HMA shows the R&R of the ignition switch on a 2001 Tib
as a picture of an engine with an exploded view of a spark plug and
wiring harness.
I'll keep digging...Have you ever replaced an ignition switch? Do they have keys on a 2001 that need to be programmed?
Thanks!

In my experience with other cars I suggest 2 things:
Completely redo the battery to chassis ground cable from terminal to terminal.
Add a heavy chassis to engine ground strap.
The intermittent nature of your issue combined with the lights cutting out is consistent with either a short to ground or a poor grounding connection.

I had a similar problem, and I had to replace the switch! it was on my 97 Accent, I don't think you have to program anything.
