If you can, change it every 12 months or 12,000 miles. 20,000 won't kill it. I did my first change at 35,000 (oops!).
Standard Gear Oil in 75-90 weight is what you want. If you wanna get tricky, buy Mobil1.
When I did mine I used REDLINE synthetic. After talking with Red, it may have been a mistake. Red's conversations with his mechanic, the mechanic does not like the redline stuff because it is too thin.
So go with standard gear oil of 75-90 weight, and add "limited slip differential friction modifier" from your local dodge/chry. dealer. (Tip again comes from Red). The Goop from dodge is yellowish/greenish and you add that in when doing the gear oil.
just some words of forwarning.
#1 Gear oil stinks to high heaven!
#2 Buy a small/medium tipped funnel (slightly smaller than your pinky) with a LONG reach, that can be bent into a 90 degree angle, the fill hole is a BITCH to get to.
