Default Gas gauge problem

The gas needle will hit empty and the low gas light will come on, but when I fill her up it only takes 7 gallons to fill up. I thought the tank held like 12 or 14 gallons so what can I do to fix the gauge.

P.S. I dont want to end up on the side of the road thumbin' for a ride to the gas station.

My Fiero used to be empty and still read 1/8 tank. It was a common problem for that model and was often fixed by throwing a resistor in series with the rest of the circuit.

Sounds like your circuit has the opposite problem, too much resistance.

Will I be able to do this in my garage or will I have to take it to a mechanic?

If it's accessible from under the back seat it's definitely a DIY job. If you have to drop the tank like in some cars then it's questionable.

The 2000 RD is easy. Remove the rear seat bottom and there is a access panel to get to the top of the tank where the fuel tank pump and sending unit is. The sending unit and fuel pump come out as one unit. Since the pump has to come out anyway, changing the fuel filter would be a wise idea.

Don't know if they carry it. Call them first. Dealer is your best bet. Although they might have to order one, it will be the right part. Check the local parts store first though.
