Default 2000 Tiburon

I browsed the forums and couldn't find anything to really help with solving the issue I'm having with my transmission. If I missed it, I apologize in advance.

When I shift into D/R/N there is a slight jerk, and it won't shift into fourth gear. From initial acceleration through first, second, and third it's fine, but it just stays in third.

I really don't want to pay for a rebuilt trans. if I don't need to. I guess I'm hoping that it's something minor, like a fluid and filter change.

Any suggestions or ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading...

Is this a new-to-you car?

No, I've had it for over three years. I just made my last payment on it and took it to get inspected at Hyundai. They said it needed a rebuilt trans and a few other minor parts. $3600.00 is what they wanted. F that.....

I took it to Cottman today for a free diagnosis and the guy said it's definitely internal/mechanical. So I guess my only choice now is to somehow get by without a ride and save some money..

Do you know anybody locally who can help you pull and replace the transmission? Get one from a junk yard for under $600 and have a shop replace it for you for another $600. Two people can do it in a .

Hopefully we have a few members in the PA area that can assist.

I actually was looking on ebay and was wondering what other 2000 models would be a direct fit, if any. I also found one at a yard for 550, but my main concern is that I'll end up having the same problems. I guess a used one is worth a shot though. Thanks.

I know it's been answered here recently. I don't want to give specifics because I can never remember, but the Elantra has the same engine and the transmission with work - look around to determine which years will apply.

It's in here somewhere, just gotta search and find it.

The automatic transmission is a very common problem with the Tiburon. You aren't alone - I lost my first one at 62,000 miles and the next at 125,000. That's when I decided to swap it to a manual

You have to be careful about using one from different model years, as they changed the electronics somewhere in there at least once. A compatible-year Elantra transmission would work, but yes a used unit does have the chance of also going bad. You never know if the previous owner used a non-spec. fluid or was a racer or whatever.

My first auto was dying a slow death when I converted to manual at ~130k miles
