Default Scientists design emergency medical procedure that makes breathing unnecessary

Scientists have designed an infusion treatment that makes breathing unnecessary for 15 minutes. A short-term oxygen substitute that can prevent damage to the heart and brain when a person has difficulty breathing, such as from lung failure or an obstructed airway.

The concept of acute small scale treatment is new. Hospitals have been using bypass machines during heart and lung transplants for years. It would definitely be an advancement for EMT's to be able to get Oxygen directly into the blood though.

Not so much an oxygen substitute as a lung substitute. They bond oxygen to fat and mix it up liquidy so it can be injected IV. If you get somebody with respiratory failure you can clear up in 5 minutes in hospital and you're 10 minutes away, they might barely make it vs. being stone dead. Also might prevent more severe heart damage from lack of oxygen. Can't do it for more than 30 minutes or so b/c you overload the bloodstream with the fatty carrier.

Good stuff. I put it right up with epi-pens for things ambulances should all have on board.

That's bloody cool. Inb4 t00ners use a dry shot of fatty oxygen in their motors ILO naws.
