Default Ice or heat on a pulled muscle?

I always thought it was ice for the first 24-48 hours and then heat thereafter, but I'm reading things that are to the contrary.

Ice is pretty mucgh to numb the pain, and heat is to loosen muscle. After I broke my leg they always put it into warm water before I started to do anything with it.

After an injury. Ice for the first 24-36 hours...after that usually moist heat.

According to Men's Health Magazine:....NEVER USE HEAT FOR PULLED MUSCLE.

drink a lot of water to feed the muscles. I believe ice reduces swelling, and as stated already the heat helps relax the muscles. If you actually pulled a muscle, I would use ice to help contract the muscles, vessels, etc.
