Going to start using the elliptical
Can't run or bike with my knee issue so I need to start using the elliptical. Just want to burn some fat and get fit. Assuming I fix my diet, what is the best way to use the elliptical? Should I do a short, high intensity workout or a longer, more moderate intensity exercise? I'm already pretty fit, just took a few months off running.
I would shoot for longevity. Build up your endurance to be able to do 60 minutes non stop. Keep your heart rate at your target level. Once endurance is built, throw in some HIIT where you're going hard for a specified time with a short rest between (rest being an easy pace for 25-30 seconds to bring your heart rate down).
I did 2 months of elliptical for 2 hours a day - 1 in the morning before breakfast (empty stomach is critical) and one hour at night. I lost over 40 pounds doing this with a no sugar, no fat diet over about 2 months. Lots of chicken, fish, rice, eggs, and vegetables. I started at 20 minutes max, and by the end I was able to do 75 minutes at the highest resistance non stop, burning 1000 calories per hour.
I've used MANY elliptical machines and I'm very picky. I love Cybex machines, and have a hard time using others because of the stride or feel of the machine.

My wife is very interested in one, any suggestions for a relatively cheap one? She's not hugely picky, but we'd like something a bit cheaper (used is perfectly fine).
Honestly, I can't recommend anything. I've been a member at 3 gyms, tried probably 10 different brands and I keep going back to Cybex. I can't rationalize spending $4,500 on one, so I'll keep paying $20/mo. to use the gym.
