They do. Get a reputable brand though, such as Colgate or Oral B. Just realize, your teeth will start to lose their whiteness after 6 months to a year. Sooner if you smoke or drink coffee or tea, or don't have good oral hygiene. It's not a do-it-once-and-it-lasts-forever thing, you have to redo it probably yearly to get the best look.
But they definitely do work. You can also have it done in a couple hours at the dentist, but they use a much stronger concotion. Doing it on your own has the same result, it just takes a little longer.
Two that I've used (my wife is a dental hygienist and works with it a bit) are a disposable type. You simply stick the strips to your teeth, let it sit for an hour or two, and pull them off. After a week or two of doing it, you'll have much whiter teeth. There are some where you get a customized retainer to fit over your teeth, then you inject the gel in there and wear it. I don't find those to be any more helpful, and they tend to be more expensive as you have to make a custom tray to fit your teeth.
It does depend on your teeth a little too. Some people's teeth respond well and get bright white quickly, others don't get as bright or take longer, and even others find them painful on their teeth.
Also to note, when you're NOT using the strips, rinse with a good fluoride mouthwash (sold at walmart or wherever. Kinda like Listerine, but it specifially says anti-cavity or fluoride on it). Whitening essentially wears down your teeth a little bit, so it's good to reinforce them when you're between treatments.
