Thinking about joining a local Taekwondo class/dojo and staying with it. How good is it for defense, fitness, and all that? Just flashy kicks or would it actually work on the street?

Being in Condition Yellow works on the street. Adding ANY martial art to that gives you an advantage to what is already a huge step up over the common "I never saw it coming" type person.

Coming from a grappling back ground and currently on my 3rd year taking Brazilian Ju-Jitsu. I would highly recommend a BBJ Dojo that incorporates MMA classes as well since you seem interested in stand up fighting. From my experience everyone is so friendly and willing to help one another. Its like a family atmosphere and everyone respects each other like a brother. You're overall strength, conditioning and flexibilty is greatly improved. Just know that 90% of fights end up on the ground. So, to beable to take someone down and control them on the ground and as well as submitting them to defend yourself. Will give you one hell of an advantage over anyone no matter what size they are. BBJ is like a chess match and believe me you will feel sore from head to toe everyday practice.

I have two cousins that actually take Taekwondo and BBJ. One is a 2nd black belt in Taekwondo and the other is a BBJ brown belt with a high school wrestling back ground. All i can say is my cousin who is taking BBJ murders my other cousin and makes him submit when they play around. They are 2 competitive jocks. The funny thing is they actually fought for real one day because they got drunk and started arguing over a damn football game .
