what hp motor for air compressor needed?

I picked up a new air compressor pump its a Ingersoll rand model 2475 it was powered by a 12.5 hp gas engine .I want to power it with a electric motor .What size motor should I use ?I have a 220v 5hp is this a big enough ?

Probably not. It depends on if the gas motor is rated a peak HP and what rpm it is designed to run at. If it is advertised as peak then a smaller electric rated motor will do, maybe a 7.5 hp electric. Their torque is instantaneous and constant. Too small electric motor will just overheat burn it up.
It will be more expensive initially but cheaper and longer lasting overall. Then there is the shaft size and frame style. Frame style is the mounting specs. Be sure to have enough electrical power, the proper wire size and good motor overload protection.
