serious responsess only
hey all im looking for a new car and wasnt thinking about hyundai but im going to give them a chance since for thier cheap price i can spend the rest i would have spent on a car to use on parts. but im trying to do soem researsearch first,
first for the accent, elantra or tiberon.
are there a offical turbo kit for either of those? somewhere where i can buy a kit, not something you can getmade, i know you can get anything made i want a kit. offical and proven.
second whats the aversge horsepower most people have with these cars? the reason i ask is i have a lanos that i love but must get rid of, so i want soemthing of equal uniqueness with the same sleeperness that my lanos hd, most people are jaw open when i pass or beat them.
my other option would be to get a ford focus with a turbo kit right from teh start . through this plan ill be runnung abotu 180- 200 hp. if hyundai can beat that for less price ill go for it. btu for right now a used focus and turbo kit is only looking to be around 10k

You want an honest answer?
Are there any proven turbo kits? Nope. Best we can offer is Alpine, who is proven elsewhere in the world, but has been graced with less-than-stellar results in the North American market. Most of the reason is because most of the North American Hyundai 4-cylinders have previously been MAF-based, and the rest of the world is MAP-based. The newest 4-cylinder engines are now MAP in North America, and gut instinct says that the Alpine kits will suddenly make a resurgance here because of the engine change.
Best offer Hyundai could make you is an Elantra GT. Four door plus hatchback, leather interior, cruise, tilt, AC, 100w cd player, power windows, power locks, 15" alloys, 4-wheel disc brakes, and digital odometer/trip odometer. A five speed would go for around $14k flat.
Strap on a $2600 Alpine turbo kit and you would be into the 180-200 wheel horsepower mark as well. The BETA engines are good to about 240 wheel horspower on stock internals; a piston swap makes them good to 350+ wheel.
You can buy a Focus cheaper, but you could also buy an 89 LX Mustang for $1000 and spend another $2000 on making it run 12's on pump gasoline. There will always be cheaper and faster, so where you draw the line is up to you.

For 100% unique. There's Hyundai, Kia, Daewoo, Suzuki.
If you go with any of the other makes, It's more than likely been done before...but you get the advantage of knowing that you can find parts.
A 240sx makes a good sleeper with an engine transplant. Ditto for the older Sentras, or NX-2000's.
My all time favorite sleeper is the Mitsubishi Galant VR4. AWD, 4G63 turbo motor in a boxy 4 door sedan. Turbo magazine is doing a build up on one right now. They are up to 450 HP & Torque with just bolt ons...on stock internals. Something wondeful about smoking all 4 wheels at 40 MPH...in a boxy 4 door sedan. They can be had for under $10,000. Hell, www.autotrader.com has a 400+ HP one for sale for $10,000 OBO.

another good sleeper is the miata. you can buy a gen1 for around 2500-3 grand. 90whp stock, so it's not fast. buy a $1300 greddy turbo kit, you're up to like 140whp in a car that weighs 2250 pounds. plus, it has rwd and perfect 50/50 weight. it's a roadster, and people are getting 300whp reliably in them. my friend is really into his, that's why i know so much. www.flyinmiata.com is one of the biggest tuners. btw, the miata's shifter has throws that are unbelievably short. i mean SHORT. this stick is basically a knob. just another plus.
Do not, I repeat do not get a focus. I had one for the better part of a year and had 8 recalls and it has an ecu that actually slows acceleration if you have your foot into it and it does not like what you are doing. I got rid of it and bought a 2002 accent. Besides a little prob of a hunting idle on a cold start I would reccomend to anyone looking for a 9000 dollar car. If you turbocharge a focus replace con rods that are powder cast pieces for Pauter rods. Still my focus zx3 never got better 24 mpg where as no matter how hard I drive my accent gs 1.6 I get 31 mpg.
heres my 2 cents
DON"T GET THE ****US.
i have a friend who has one he's been through four transmissions in about 6 months one of which actually detonated (Not sure how the heck that happened but it actually threw parts through the case)
htey can be reliable with alot of work and parts are waaaaaaaaaay more readily available but its also been done before... to death

There is also the Elantra GT 4dr with less curb weight or GLS sedan for even less money and curb weight. Plus the powertrain is virtually bulletproof. You very rarely hear about engine or 5spd transmission problems with these Beta I and II powertrains.Best offer Hyundai could make you is an Elantra GT. That is precisely why I bought by Elantra GL last week. I don't know if the GLS is the model equivalent... I think the the VE in Canada is the same as the GLS, since we don't have one.
Since you are asking, I'll add my 2Yen. Stay away from FF if you really want performance.
Someone mentioned a 240SX and they make an excellent platform. You can get an SR20 from Japan and do an engine swap. there are many places to cater to just this. They can put out mad power. I know a guy on the main island with an S13 cranking out 540hp an is a drift maniac.
You may not want to go that far, but its an option.
there is also an RB26 swap in many different Nissan possibilities (hmmmm an Infiniti J30 with an RB26
)
The Gallant VR4 is also one hell of a sleeper. Lots of opportunities there.
You can swap a Mazda 13b or 2ob engine and you have a screaming monster.
You have many options but if you go FF after all, get an Integra. At least they have the best support in the US.
