Anybody have some good advice on what shop vac to get? I was looking at this one at Home Depot but it appears to be a no name and wasnt sure if I should be cautious of them.

one word. SEARS. good cheap strong vacs + warranty.

 

ridgid is a good quality tool name but like HKC said sears is where i would go for shop vacs. if you periodically blow your filter out they will last forever and you will see a increase in suction. been using the same filter now for 3 years and i suck the dirt out of the cracks of my carport at least monthly.

another thing to look at is stay right around 7 gallons. just say for instance you do use your shop vac to help a friend with a busted water line in his basement. you looking at that 12 gallon model and not remembering that one gallon of water weight roughly 8.35 lbs, you will have 100 lbs to lug up a flight up stairs to empty it.

50 to 60 lbs. is far more manageable and if you just clean it out everytime when you are doing regular cleanup it will keep the velocity of suction the same also.
